Mahua Moitra Reports In-Flight Harassment Incident On IndiGo Flight To Delhi

Mahua Moitra alleges harassment on IndiGo flight and files complaint over political slogans.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra has alleged that she was subjected to harassment during an IndiGo flight from Kolkata to Delhi on Thursday, claiming that a group of passengers filmed her and raised political slogans inside the aircraft cabin. The incident has triggered political reactions and prompted Moitra to lodge a formal complaint seeking action against those involved.

According to Moitra, she was travelling in seat 1F on IndiGo flight 6E 719 when a group of four to six men boarded the aircraft and allegedly stared at her before moving to seats at the rear. She stated that the group began filming her during the flight and later raised slogans such as “Jai Shri Ram” and “TMC chor,” which she described as politically motivated and aimed at intimidation.

The situation reportedly escalated after the flight landed in Delhi and was waiting for the cabin doors to open. Video footage from the incident shows passengers shouting phrases including “pishi chor, bhaipo chor,” a reference to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee. Moitra has maintained that the behaviour was not spontaneous public anger but a targeted attempt to harass her inside a confined space.

In her complaint, Moitra urged IndiGo to investigate the incident, review the cabin crew’s report, identify the individuals involved, and place them on a no-fly list. She also tagged Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu on social media, calling for official intervention and stronger safeguards for public representatives facing in-flight harassment. Moitra, who represents Krishnanagar in Parliament, said she was travelling for a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence at the time of the incident.

Sources indicate that airline staff reportedly intervened during the episode to stop the sloganeering, but formal action is expected only after the submission of a written complaint, as per aviation safety and passenger conduct protocols. IndiGo is yet to issue a detailed public statement on the matter, though internal review procedures are expected to be initiated once the complaint is officially registered.

The incident comes amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal following a major electoral shift in the state. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recently won a large majority in the Assembly elections, while the ruling TMC suffered significant losses. Despite the results, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has not stepped down and is reportedly considering legal options to challenge the outcome. The episode involving Moitra has further intensified political exchanges between rival parties in an already charged environment.
