Maharashtra Congress Demands Urgent Session to Address Flood Crisis
Congress pushes for special session to tackle Maharashtra's flood devastation.
In the wake of catastrophic flooding across Maharashtra, Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar has urgently called for a special session of the state legislature to address the widespread damage caused by relentless heavy rains. In a letter to Governor Acharya Devvrat, Wadettiwar highlighted the dire situation in Marathwada, Vidarbha, and western Maharashtra, where unprecedented rainfall has triggered a severe crisis, leaving farmers and residents in profound distress.
Wadettiwar, echoing a similar demand from NCP (SP) leader Jayant Patil, urged the government to declare a "wet drought" and roll out an immediate financial relief and rehabilitation package for those affected. The torrential rains have wreaked havoc, destroying crops across over four lakh hectares, eroding farmlands, and rendering years of agricultural labor futile. Livestock losses, collapsed homes, and human casualties have further deepened the tragedy, Wadettiwar noted in his letter.
The crisis extends beyond agriculture, with damaged electric poles and power lines disrupting electricity in numerous areas. Major roads connecting villages and cities have been washed away, paralyzing transportation, while contaminated drinking water has sparked fears of a public health emergency. "This is a grave situation requiring urgent policy decisions to alleviate the suffering of our people," Wadettiwar emphasized.

He demanded swift action, including fulfilling promises of farm loan waivers and providing prompt compensation based on accurate assessments of crop and property losses. "A special session of the Maharashtra legislative assembly must be convened immediately to discuss this crisis in depth and formulate concrete relief measures," he wrote.
On Sunday, NCP (SP) leader Jayant Patil had also pressed the governor for a three-day special session to address the rain-induced devastation, underscoring the growing clamor among opposition leaders for decisive government action. As Maharashtra grapples with the aftermath of this natural calamity, the call for a special legislative session reflects the urgent need to prioritize relief and rehabilitation for the millions affected, with the opposition pressing the state to act swiftly to restore normalcy and support its struggling citizens.
