Congress Demands Action After BJP Leader Threatens Rahul Gandhi’s Life

Congress demands action against BJP spokesperson's chilling threat.

Congress General Secretary K C Venugopal has urgently written to Home Minister Amit Shah, condemning a shocking death threat against Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha. The threat, made by Printu Mahadev, a former ABVP state president and alleged BJP spokesperson, was aired during a televised debate on a Malayalam channel. Mahadev's statement that "Rahul Gandhi will be shot in the chest" was described by Venugopal as a "cold, calculated, and chilling" incitement to violence.

Venugopal emphasized that such remarks from a ruling party spokesperson endanger Gandhi’s life and undermine India’s constitutional values and rule of law. He highlighted the Central Reserve Police Force’s repeated warnings about threats to Gandhi’s safety, noting a leaked letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge as evidence of suspicious intent. Venugopal accused the BJP of fostering a "toxic atmosphere of hate" through social media and public statements, potentially signaling a broader conspiracy.

Calling Gandhi a symbol of India’s pluralistic ethos and a leader carrying the legacy of his assassinated family members—Indira Gandhi (1984) and Rajiv Gandhi (1991)—Venugopal warned that inaction would be seen as complicity in normalizing violence. He demanded swift and severe legal action through state police to ensure justice.

Congress leader Pawan Khera labeled the threat part of a larger conspiracy, pointing to the leaked CRPF letter as evidence of politicization of Gandhi’s security. Kerala Opposition Leader VD Satheesan also criticized the state government for failing to act against Mahadev. The Congress insists that such threats are an attack not only on Gandhi but on India’s democratic spirit.
