Lt Gen Mohit Malhotra Takes Over As Army’s South Western Command Chief

Lt Gen Mohit Malhotra on Wednesday assumed charge as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Indian Army’s South Western Command, headquartered in Jaipur. The appointment marks a key leadership transition in one of the Indian Army’s strategically significant operational formations. The South Western Command plays a vital role in overseeing military preparedness in the western theatre.

Lt Gen Mohit Malhotra, who has been decorated with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Sena Medal (SM), brings over 37 years of service in the Indian Army. Commissioned into the 47 Armoured Regiment in June 1989, he has built a long career spanning command, staff, and instructional roles. His experience covers both operational deployments and institutional leadership responsibilities.

Before taking over his current assignment, Lt Gen Malhotra served as the Chief of Staff at Headquarters Eastern Command. In that role, he was involved in strengthening operational preparedness, organisational effectiveness, and coordination across formations. His tenure was marked by efforts aimed at improving institutional cohesion and readiness within the command structure of the Indian Army.

Over the course of his service, Lt Gen Malhotra has held command of multiple high-value formations, including an Armoured Regiment, an Independent Armoured Brigade, an Armoured Division, and the Desert Corps. He has also served in challenging environments, including operational deployments in regions such as the Siachen Glacier, reflecting extensive exposure to extreme-altitude and high-intensity military conditions.

Lt Gen Malhotra’s academic and professional development includes two Master’s degrees in Defence Studies, one from King’s College London, along with two M.Phil degrees in Political Science and Defence & Strategic Studies. He has also attended advanced military courses in India and abroad, including the National Defence College and the Higher Air Command Course, and has consistently performed at the top of his professional military programs.

With his assumption of command at the South Western Command, Lt Gen Malhotra takes responsibility at a time of continued operational importance along India’s western front. His leadership is expected to focus on maintaining readiness, strengthening coordination, and enhancing strategic capabilities. His appointment underscores the Indian Army’s emphasis on experienced leadership for critical operational commands.
