Ladakh Records 72,834 Tourist Arrivals In May, Shows 121% Growth
Ladakh saw a sharp rise in tourist arrivals during May.
The Union Territory of Ladakh has recorded a sharp rise in tourism activity, with officials reporting a 121 per cent increase in tourist arrivals in May 2026 compared to the same month last year. According to the administration, a total of 72,834 tourists visited the region in May 2026, up from 32,927 in May 2025, marking one of the strongest monthly surges in recent years.
Overall tourist inflows between January and May 2026 also showed significant growth. Ladakh welcomed 1,17,546 tourists during this period, compared to 81,827 in the corresponding months of 2025, reflecting a year-on-year increase of around 44 per cent. Officials said the figures underline sustained recovery and expansion in the region’s tourism sector.
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena attributed the growth to a series of administrative reforms aimed at improving tourism infrastructure and easing regulatory processes. Measures such as reducing compliance burdens, simplifying documentation procedures and granting “industry” status to hotels and guest houses have, according to the administration, helped boost investor and stakeholder confidence.

The administration has also focused on expanding Ladakh’s tourism profile beyond the traditional peak season. Initiatives promoting winter tourism, adventure tourism, wildlife tourism, astro-tourism, eco-tourism and cultural tourism have been introduced in an effort to position the region as a year-round destination. Officials said improvements in connectivity and infrastructure have also played a key role in attracting more visitors.
Foreign tourist arrivals also registered an upward trend, increasing by more than 15 per cent during the first five months of 2026. A total of 6,961 foreign tourists visited Ladakh during this period, compared to 6,026 in the same period last year. Thailand, Vietnam and the United States emerged as the leading source countries, alongside steady inflows from Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany and France.
The administration said the rise in tourist numbers has generated renewed optimism among stakeholders across the tourism ecosystem, including hoteliers, homestay owners, tour operators, transport providers, artisans and local entrepreneurs. Officials believe the continued growth reflects Ladakh’s strengthening position as a major domestic and international travel destination, supported by targeted policy interventions and infrastructure development.
