Koppal Assault: Hindu Man Thrashed for Mediating Muslim Couple’s Dispute

A Hindu man was allegedly beaten by a group of men in Karnataka’s Koppal district after being wrongly suspected of having an affair with a Muslim woman. The incident took place at a bus stand on Tuesday. The victim, Venkatesh, sustained serious injuries in the assault. Police have registered a case and begun an investigation. The incident has raised concerns over mob violence and misunderstanding.

According to the police complaint, the woman, Afia, had left her home after a dispute with her husband, Azmeer. Azmeer reportedly asked Venkatesh, a neighbour and family friend, to help resolve the matter. Venkatesh went to the bus stand to speak to Afia. She was travelling with her children to her mother’s house. His role was limited to mediation, police said.

However, a group of men allegedly saw Venkatesh with Afia and her children and misunderstood the situation. They assumed he was having an affair with her. Without verifying the facts, the group reportedly attacked him. Locals tried to intervene and explain the truth. Despite this, the assault continued.

Police said the families involved had known each other for nearly 15 years. A case has been registered against Azmeer, Khajafeer, Indrawali, and others. Authorities confirmed that Venkatesh had no personal relationship with Afia. The attack was based on suspicion rather than evidence. Police said further action will follow after investigation.

After the case was filed, a group of people gathered outside the police station. They demanded that a counter-complaint be registered against Venkatesh. This led to heated arguments and a brief disturbance. Police were seen trying to control the situation. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
