Kerala Under Orange And Yellow Alerts As IMD Forecasts Heavy Rainfall
IMD warns of heavy rain and flooding as monsoon approaches Kerala.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow weather alerts across all districts of Kerala as the state prepares for the onset of the southwest monsoon. The alerts remain in force until June 6, with forecasts indicating the likelihood of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall across multiple regions. Authorities have warned that the intense rain activity could trigger waterlogging, flash floods, traffic disruptions, and intermittent power outages in vulnerable areas.
The IMD has also indicated that the southwest monsoon is expected to reach Kerala on June 4, marking a slight delay from its usual onset date of June 1. Meteorologists note that such variations in arrival dates are not uncommon, but the timing of the monsoon’s entry can influence its progression across the Indian mainland in the coming weeks. The delayed onset has prompted close monitoring of evolving weather systems over the Arabian Sea.
According to the latest district-wise forecasts, several regions including Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Thrissur are under orange alert, indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall at isolated locations. Other districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, remain under yellow alert, signalling moderate to heavy rainfall conditions and the need for continued vigilance.

The IMD has cautioned that rainfall in orange-alert districts could range between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm in a 24-hour period. Such intense downpours may lead to localized flooding, disruption of road transport, and damage to weak structures. Disaster management authorities have advised residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas to remain alert and follow official safety instructions as conditions evolve.
The alert pattern is expected to shift over the coming days. On June 4, nearly half of Kerala’s districts are likely to remain under orange alert as the monsoon is expected to make its arrival. On June 5, heavy rainfall warnings continue across northern districts, while June 6 is forecast to see a reduction in orange alerts, though some regions will still remain under heightened watch.
Officials have emphasized that the early phase of the monsoon season is often marked by highly localized but intense rainfall events. With Kerala serving as the gateway for the southwest monsoon in India, weather developments in the state are being closely tracked, as they typically signal broader rainfall patterns across the country in the weeks ahead.
