Kerala Honours Homemaker Mini Antony for Sparking 2014 Anti-Drug Campaign

Kerala honours homemaker Mini Antony for alerting authorities to narcotics abuse.

Kerala has honoured homemaker Mini Antony for her pivotal role in bringing the issue of drug abuse among school students to the attention of the state government more than a decade ago. At the inauguration of the constituency-level phase of "Operation Toofan: The Narco Hunt" in Kochi on Thursday, Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala presented Antony with the "Toofan Warrior" badge in recognition of her contribution to the state's fight against narcotics. The honour comes as Kerala intensifies its latest anti-drug campaign aimed at dismantling narcotics networks across the state.

According to the state government, Mini Antony first alerted authorities in 2014 after noticing a worrying rise in drug use among school students and young people in her coastal village of Elamkunnapuzha in Ernakulam district. Concerned by the growing menace, she approached government officials and highlighted the seriousness of the issue, urging immediate intervention to prevent addiction from spreading among teenagers and youth in the area.

Speaking at the event, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala recalled that Antony's warning played a key role in prompting the then Congress-led government, headed by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, to launch the "Clean Campus, Safe Campus" campaign later in 2014. Chennithala, who also served as Home Minister during that period, said her timely intervention helped bring the issue of drug abuse into public focus and encouraged authorities to adopt preventive measures within educational institutions.

The recognition comes as Kerala Police continue "Operation Toofan: The Narco Hunt", a statewide initiative aimed at curbing the sale, distribution and consumption of narcotic substances. The campaign involves coordinated operations by law enforcement agencies to identify drug trafficking networks, arrest offenders and strengthen surveillance in areas considered vulnerable to narcotics-related activities. Officials have described the campaign as one of the state's most extensive anti-drug drives in recent years.

Authorities have repeatedly stressed that public participation remains essential in tackling drug abuse, particularly among young people. They have encouraged parents, teachers, local communities and educational institutions to report suspicious activities and work closely with law enforcement agencies. Officials believe early intervention and community awareness are critical in preventing substance abuse and protecting vulnerable sections of society.

By honouring Mini Antony, the Kerala government has highlighted the importance of citizen involvement in addressing social challenges. Her recognition serves as an acknowledgement that individual action can influence public policy and contribute to long-term efforts against drug abuse. As Operation Toofan continues across the state, officials hope the award will inspire more members of the public to actively support initiatives aimed at creating safer communities and protecting future generations from the dangers of narcotics.
