Kerala Govt Plans Expanded Market Measures To Keep Essential Commodity Prices In Check

The Kerala Agriculture Department will step up market interventions to prevent artificial price rises in vegetables and other essential commodities during the festive season and the upcoming Sabarimala pilgrimage period, Agriculture Minister T Siddique said on Friday. The government also plans to strengthen measures aimed at protecting consumers from excessive prices while ensuring farmers receive fair returns for their produce. Siddique said the department would intensify its intervention in agricultural markets to control price fluctuations and prevent exploitation by middlemen.

The measures are expected to become particularly important during periods of increased demand, when prices of vegetables and other daily-use commodities typically come under pressure. The minister said steps would be taken to curb the role of intermediaries who exploit seasonal demand to increase prices. The government intends to ensure that agricultural produce reaches consumers through more efficient marketing channels while reducing the gap between the prices received by farmers and those paid by consumers. The Agriculture Department's experience with farmers' markets during the Onam season was also highlighted. These markets helped facilitate digital transactions and ensured timely payments to farmers, providing an alternative to conventional trading arrangements.

The government is expected to build on this model as it expands market interventions during other periods of high demand. The upcoming Sabarimala pilgrimage season is another factor behind the government's focus on market management. Large numbers of pilgrims travel through different parts of Kerala during the season, increasing demand for food and other essential commodities. Authorities want to prevent such demand from being used to trigger artificial price increases or unfair trading practices. The minister also announced plans for a state-level Keralotsavam to mark Coconut Day.

The programme is expected to highlight the importance of coconut cultivation and promote initiatives aimed at strengthening the state's coconut economy. Kerala has traditionally been one of India's major coconut-producing regions, making the revival of the sector an important agricultural priority for the state. The proposed project is expected to take a broader approach to improving coconut cultivation rather than focusing only on short-term production gains.

Strengthening productivity could help improve farm incomes while ensuring a more stable supply of coconuts and related agricultural products in the state. The government's market intervention strategy comes against the backdrop of periodic fluctuations in prices of vegetables and essential commodities. Seasonal demand, supply disruptions and the role of intermediaries can all influence retail prices. Direct procurement and organised farmers' markets can help reduce some of these pressures by creating more efficient links between producers and consumers. Digital payments through farmers' markets have also been identified as a positive development.

Timely settlement of payments can provide farmers with greater financial certainty and reduce delays associated with traditional transactions. The government is expected to encourage similar practices as part of its efforts to strengthen agricultural marketing. The Agriculture Department's plans therefore combine immediate price-control measures with longer-term initiatives for farmers. Siddique said the government would continue to monitor market conditions and take necessary steps to prevent unfair price increases. The measures are expected to gain importance as Kerala enters successive periods of increased consumer demand linked to festivals and the Sabarimala pilgrimage season. The government hopes that stronger market intervention, improved direct sales and better payment systems will help maintain reasonable prices while ensuring farmers benefit from their produce. At the same time, the proposed coconut revival project is intended to strengthen one of Kerala's key agricultural sectors and boost production over the longer term.
