Raksha Bandhan: PM Modi Meets Schoolchildren In Delhi, Exchanges Hi-Fives And Smiles

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated Raksha Bandhan with schoolchildren at his residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg in New Delhi on Friday, sharing an informal interaction marked by smiles, handshakes and high-fives. Modi shared a reel from the celebrations on Instagram, describing the gathering as a time of “Hi5, smiles and more”. The interaction took place as the country observed the festival celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister interacted with the children and exchanged greetings with them. A child asked Modi about his childhood dream, to which he responded in Hindi that it was to meet all of them. The Prime Minister was also seen shaking hands and exchanging high-fives with the children, who could be heard laughing during the interaction. He spent time with the group and offered his blessings to the children.

Earlier in the day, Modi extended Raksha Bandhan greetings to people across the country through a social media post. He wished for happiness, prosperity and success for everyone and expressed hope that the bonds of love, affection and mutual trust associated with the festival would remain strong. His message came as families across India observed the occasion with traditional ceremonies and gatherings.

Raksha Bandhan is traditionally associated with the bond between brothers and sisters. On the festival, sisters tie rakhis around their brothers’ wrists and offer prayers for their health, happiness and prosperity. Brothers traditionally respond by expressing their affection, giving gifts and promising to stand by their sisters. Families also mark the occasion by exchanging sweets and spending time together.

The festival is observed on Purnima, the full moon day, of the Hindu month of Shravana and is generally celebrated in August according to the Gregorian calendar. This year, Raksha Bandhan falls on Friday, with celebrations taking place across India and Nepal. Traditional rituals include applying a tilak on the brother’s forehead before tying the rakhi, followed by the exchange of gifts and sweets.

Modi’s interaction with schoolchildren added a public dimension to the festival’s celebrations at his official residence. The informal moments with the children, including high-fives and conversations, were shared on his social media accounts as part of his Raksha Bandhan message. The Prime Minister’s engagement came alongside his broader greetings to citizens marking the annual festival of sibling affection and mutual care.
