Karnataka CM to Discuss Cabinet Reshuffle With Congress Leadership in Delhi

Chief Minister D K Shivakumar is expected to consult the Congress central leadership over possible changes to the Karnataka Cabinet following criticism about the absence of a woman minister and growing dissatisfaction among legislators denied positions. The discussions are also likely to cover portfolio allocations for 19 ministers inducted on August 3.

Shivakumar is expected to travel to New Delhi in the coming days as the party seeks to resolve disagreements before the state Legislature’s monsoon session begins on August 13. The Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (Secular) are preparing to target the government over controversies surrounding the Cabinet expansion.

Among the issues confronting the Congress are the lack of female representation, the induction of a legislator accused in a corruption case and the exclusion of an Other Backward Classes leader considered close to former chief minister Siddaramaiah. Several senior Congress legislators who were denied ministerial berths have also expressed resentment.

A Congress legislator said some changes would be made and that a woman minister would be inducted soon. The proposed adjustment is expected to help the party address criticism over representation while reducing internal discontent that could affect the government’s functioning and its position during the forthcoming legislative session.

Congress leaders attempted to balance caste and regional considerations while expanding the Cabinet. Ensuring representation for the broad coalition of castes and communities that has traditionally supported the party remains central to its political calculations. However, the limited number of ministerial positions and competing claims from different groups have complicated that balancing exercise.

Cabinet formation in Congress-led governments is often followed by lobbying from unsuccessful aspirants, but the presence of multiple power centres in Karnataka and within the party’s national leadership has intensified the pressure. Shivakumar’s consultations are expected to determine both the allocation of portfolios and whether further ministerial changes are necessary to restore internal stability.
