Mumbai to Get 4 New Overbridges From Dadar to Ghatkopar

Four road overbridges are being constructed between Dadar and Ghatkopar to reduce traffic congestion and strengthen east-west connectivity across Mumbai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation are jointly implementing the projects at an estimated investment of ₹1,179 crore, with completion planned in phases over the next two years.

The 112-year-old Elphinstone Bridge is being replaced by Mumbai’s first double-decker road overbridge, which will also form part of the Sewri-Worli Connector. Its lower deck will carry local traffic across the railway tracks, while the upper level will connect to the upcoming corridor. Both decks will have four lanes, with pedestrian footpaths on the lower level. Foundation work and girder assembly are underway, and completion is targeted for November 2026.

Near Dadar railway station, the century-old Tilak Bridge is being replaced with a 600-metre cable-stayed structure featuring six traffic lanes, tripling the capacity of the existing two-lane bridge. A structural audit in 2019 recommended its replacement. The first arm is approximately 70 per cent complete and is expected to open by April 2027, after which the old bridge will be demolished and a parallel arm constructed.

The Y Bridge at Byculla is being replaced with a 916-metre cable-stayed bridge intended to improve connectivity along the Byculla-Dadar corridor. A major engineering challenge involves launching a 1,500-tonne steel span above the Central Vegetable Market without interrupting market activity or railway operations. The dual-carriageway bridge is scheduled to open by December 2026.

A six-lane cable-stayed bridge is also being built along the Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road across LBS Marg to connect Ghatkopar East and West. The ₹350-crore project will become Mumbai’s first cable-stayed road bridge in the suburbs. Construction is proceeding in phases to maintain traffic flow, with completion targeted for 2027.

The four projects form part of a wider programme to replace ageing British-era bridges that can no longer adequately handle Mumbai’s rising traffic volumes. The new structures will offer wider carriageways, improved road alignment and greater load-bearing capacity. Authorities expect them to ease bottlenecks near busy railway crossings and improve movement between the city’s eastern and western neighbourhoods.
