Justice Soumen Sen Takes Helm of Meghalaya High Court

In a momentous ceremony at the Raj Bhavan’s Darbar Hall, Justice Soumen Sen was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, marking a new chapter in the state’s judicial leadership. Governor CH Vijayashankar administered the oath of office, with the event graced by an array of dignitaries, including Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Leader of the Opposition Mukul Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, and Chief Secretary Shakil P. Ahammed.

Justice Sen steps into the role following the retirement of Justice Sanjib Banerjee on September 5, bringing with him a formidable legal pedigree. Chief Minister Sangma lauded the appointment, stating, “Justice Sen brings a wealth of experience and wisdom, which will undoubtedly guide the judiciary in serving the people of Meghalaya with integrity and fairness. We wish him a successful and impactful tenure.” The appointment, formalized by the President of India on September 26, was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium, reflecting Sen’s distinguished career and judicial acumen.

Born on July 27, 1965, in Kolkata, Justice Sen graduated with an LL.B. from the University of Calcutta in 1990, securing first place in his class. Enrolling as an advocate in January 1991, he honed his expertise over two decades at the Calcutta High Court, handling a wide array of civil, constitutional, and commercial cases. Elevated as a judge in April 2011, Sen’s reputation for incisive judgments and commitment to justice precedes him.
