Job Candidate Criticizes Company's Zoom Rejection Call After Three Rounds of Interviews

Job seeker criticizes company for scheduling Zoom call specifically to deliver rejection.

A 24-year-old job applicant has sparked widespread discussion online after sharing that a company scheduled a Zoom meeting solely to inform her that she had not been selected for a role. In a viral Reddit post titled "Truly flabbergasted," the woman said the unexpected rejection left her feeling embarrassed, humiliated and completely caught off guard after completing three rounds of interviews over two months.

According to the applicant, she had applied for the position shortly after completing her master's degree and believed the recruitment process had gone well. When she received an email inviting her to a Zoom meeting with the recruiter, assistant director and director, she assumed it was a final discussion to offer her the job and joined the call with high expectations.

Instead, the three interviewers thanked her for participating in the hiring process and informed her that another candidate had been selected. The woman said she was stunned by the announcement and remained silent for a few moments before thanking the panel for the opportunity. When the recruiters asked if she had any questions and remarked that she seemed upset, she admitted that the format of the meeting had led her to believe she had secured the position.

The recruiters reportedly explained that they wanted to deliver the news in a more personal manner rather than through an email and apologised for any misunderstanding. They also said they would keep her feedback in mind for future hiring processes. Despite the apology, the applicant said the experience left her feeling "embarrassed, humiliated and dumb," describing the entire situation as difficult to process.

The Reddit post quickly gained traction, with many users sympathising with the applicant and questioning the company's approach. Several commenters argued that if the recruiters wanted to be personal, a simple phone call would have been more appropriate than scheduling a formal video meeting that naturally created expectations of a job offer after multiple interview rounds.

Others described the incident as a classic example of a message that "could have been an email," while some called the hiring process a red flag. Many users agreed that arranging a Zoom meeting solely to communicate a rejection was unnecessary and potentially misleading, highlighting broader conversations about transparency, candidate experience and professional communication during recruitment.
