Jharkhand: Heavy Rains Claim 5 Lives and Flood Rivers
Heavy rains flood Jharkhand, claiming lives and damaging infrastructure.
Jharkhand is grappling with relentless heavy rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for continued downpours across multiple districts until Tuesday, August 26, 2025. The affected districts include Palamu, Garhwa, Chatra, Latehar, Lohardaga, Bokaro, Gumla, Simdega, Khunti, Ranchi, Ramgarh, Hazaribag, Koderma, Dhanbad, and Giridih until 8:30 am Monday, with the alert extending to 12 districts until Tuesday morning, according to Baburaj PP, in-charge of the Ranchi Meteorological Centre.
The incessant rain over the past two days has disrupted normal life, submerging roads, damaging houses, bridges, and culverts, and uprooting trees across the state. Tragically, at least five fatalities have been reported in rain-related incidents, with farmers facing significant crop and livestock losses. Major rivers, including the Subernarekha, Kharkai, Barakar, and Damodar, are flowing above danger levels, heightening flood risks in several areas.
The IMD forecasts a slight reduction in rainfall intensity from Sunday, but intermittent showers may persist until August 29 due to a new low-pressure system expected to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal near the Odisha-West Bengal coasts on Monday. Jharkhand has already recorded 927.7 mm of rainfall from June 1 to August 23, 2025, a 32% surplus compared to the normal 738.3 mm, exacerbating the challenges faced by residents and authorities.
