Jharkhand Assembly Mourns Shibu Soren, Ends Session

Jharkhand Assembly adjourns sine die after Shibu Soren’s death.

The Jharkhand Assembly was adjourned sine die on Monday in a heartfelt tribute to former Chief Minister Shibu Soren, who passed away at 81 in a private hospital in Delhi, marking the end of a towering political era. Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto announced the adjournment, describing Soren’s death as an “irreparable loss” to Jharkhand and the nation. “Dishom Guru Shibu Soren left for heavenly abode today... He was known for his fight for the poor and his relentless advocacy for tribal rights,” Mahto said, his voice heavy with emotion.

As the House convened at 11 am, legislators from across parties honored the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder by raising slogans such as “Shibu Soren Amar Rahe” (Long live Shibu Soren), reflecting the deep respect for his legacy. Soren, a revered tribal leader from the Santhal community, founded the JMM to champion the cause of Jharkhand’s statehood and served as Chief Minister three times between 2005 and 2010. His decades-long career also included five terms as a Lok Sabha MP and a stint as Union Minister for Coal under former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The five-day monsoon session, which began on August 1, was cut short to mourn Soren, whose contributions to uplifting the underprivileged and securing tribal rights have left an indelible mark on Jharkhand’s political landscape. The adjournment underscores the profound impact of his passing, as leaders and citizens alike reflect on his enduring legacy.
