Jaishankar Signals Bright Future for India-China Relations
Jaishankar’s bold push for India-China harmony
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng on Monday, emphasizing that sustained normalization of India-China ties could yield significant mutual benefits. The meeting, held in Beijing, marked Jaishankar’s first visit to China since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash strained bilateral relations.
Jaishankar highlighted the positive momentum in ties since Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping met in Kazan in October 2024. “Our bilateral relationship has been steadily improving,” he said in his opening remarks, expressing confidence that his discussions would maintain this trajectory. He also celebrated the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations and praised the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a move widely appreciated in India.
Stressing the complex global landscape, Jaishankar underscored the importance of open dialogue between the two neighboring powers. “As major economies, an exchange of views is vital,” he noted. His visit, part of a two-nation tour following Singapore, includes attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Tianjin on July 15, where he will also hold talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The visit follows Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s trip to Qingdao for the SCO defence ministers’ conference in June and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s engagements in China, signaling a concerted effort to mend ties post-Galwan. Jaishankar’s backing of China’s SCO presidency further reflects India’s commitment to constructive engagement.
