Jagannath Chariots Roll Through Puri As Millions Defy Heavy Rain During Yatra

Millions of devotees gathered in Odisha's temple town of Puri on Thursday to participate in the annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath despite relentless rain and waterlogged streets caused by more than 200 mm of rainfall over the previous 45 hours. The grand procession, one of Hinduism's most significant religious festivals, saw devotees lining the 3-km ceremonial route as the towering wooden chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra rolled towards the Gundicha Temple amid chants, prayers and traditional rituals.

Despite challenging weather conditions, the turnout remained massive, with pilgrims from across India and abroad arriving to witness the centuries-old festival. Authorities maintained that the procession would continue under enhanced safety measures, while officials monitored weather conditions and crowd movement throughout the day. The annual Rath Yatra holds immense religious significance, symbolising the deities' journey from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, where they remain for several days before returning during the Bahuda Yatra.

To ensure the smooth conduct of the festival, the Odisha government launched one of its largest-ever security operations. Around 12,000 security personnel were deployed, including contingents from the Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Rapid Action Force (RAF) and National Security Guard (NSG). The security grid also included anti-drone units, snipers, Coast Guard personnel and Marine Police, with authorities maintaining surveillance along the coastline and throughout the city. A network of 473 AI-enabled CCTV cameras, integrated with drone-jamming systems, monitored the event through two command-and-control centres to enhance real-time security and crowd management.

Extensive transport and public convenience arrangements were also put in place to accommodate the influx of pilgrims. The East Coast Railway operated special trains connecting Puri with major destinations across Odisha, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra. At Puri railway station, officials established waiting areas capable of accommodating around 30,000 passengers and installed 129 modular toilets, 68 bathing units, 65 drinking water kiosks and 10 chilled water booths. Three medical centres equipped with ambulances operated round the clock, while battery-operated vehicles and wheelchairs were made available for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

The Rath Yatra is one of India's largest annual religious gatherings and attracts millions of devotees every year. The elaborate procession is marked by the ceremonial pulling of the massive wooden chariots through the streets of Puri, a ritual believed to bring blessings to those who participate or witness it. The festival is deeply rooted in Odisha's cultural and spiritual traditions and is celebrated with elaborate rituals that have been followed for centuries.

Despite the heavy rainfall disrupting normal movement in parts of the city, devotees continued to participate in the festival with enthusiasm, underscoring the enduring faith associated with Lord Jagannath. Authorities remained on high alert throughout the day, coordinating security, transportation, medical assistance and emergency response measures to ensure the safe conduct of the event. The successful management of the massive gathering amid adverse weather highlighted the extensive planning undertaken by the state administration for one of the country's most significant religious occasions.
