Iran’s Mojtaba Khamenei Orders Strait Closure, Warns US Bases Amid Rising Tensions

Iran’s new Supreme Leader threatens US bases, demands Strait of Hormuz remain closed as leverage.

Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, issued his first public statement on Thursday, asserting that the Strait of Hormuz must remain closed and warning of continued attacks on Middle Eastern neighbors. His remarks, broadcast on state television, were read by a news anchor, with Khamenei himself not appearing on camera.

In his statement, Khamenei emphasized that the United States’ military presence in the region is unacceptable, warning that American bases could be targeted if they remain operational. “All US bases should be immediately closed in the region,” he said, framing the closure of the strategic waterway as a key leverage point against Washington.

The Iranian leader also vowed to seek retribution for those killed in the ongoing conflict, claiming that Iran would “obtain compensation” from its adversaries. He added that if these demands are not met voluntarily, Iran would take action against enemy assets or destroy them to the same extent. Analysts view Khamenei’s statements as signaling a more hardline stance in the region under his leadership.

On the same day, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian outlined three conditions for ending Iran’s conflict with the United States and Israel. Pezeshkian stated that any resolution must acknowledge Iran’s legitimate rights, guarantee protection against future attacks, and include reparations for damages suffered during the war.

Pezeshkian reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to regional peace in a post on social media platform X, noting discussions with leaders of Russia and Pakistan. “The only way to end this war—ignited by the Zionist regime and US—is recognising Iran’s legitimate rights, payment of reparations, and firm international guarantees against future aggression,” he wrote.

Khamenei’s and Pezeshkian’s statements come amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region, where Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz—a critical oil shipping route—has long been a strategic concern for global powers. Observers say the new leadership may adopt a more assertive posture, further complicating diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region.
