IndiGo Passengers Face Three-Hour Delay After Mumbai-Bound Flight’s Pilot Suddenly Falls Ill

Pilot’s illness causes three-hour IndiGo flight delay.

A Mumbai-bound IndiGo flight from Varanasi was delayed by three and a half hours on Thursday after the pilot scheduled to operate the service suddenly reported sick, prompting the airline to make alternative arrangements. Flight 6E-6544 was scheduled to depart from Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi for Mumbai. The delay was caused by the need to arrange another pilot before the aircraft could operate the service. According to sources, the pilot assigned to the flight unexpectedly called in sick, leaving IndiGo to arrange a replacement.

An airline source said the carrier had to "rush in another pilot" who subsequently operated the flight to Mumbai. Since Varanasi is not an IndiGo base station, another source said the replacement pilot was brought in from Ahmedabad. The additional logistical arrangements contributed to the three-and-a-half-hour delay in the departure of the flight. The airline said passengers were informed about the reason for the delay and were provided refreshments while the alternative arrangements were being completed.

The aircraft eventually departed for Mumbai after the replacement pilot arrived and the necessary arrangements were made. The incident resulted in a significant delay for passengers travelling on the Varanasi-Mumbai service, although the flight was ultimately operated to its destination. Varanasi airport director Puneet Gupta, however, attributed the delay to technical reasons. He said the flight had been delayed by three and a half hours before subsequently operating to Mumbai. Gupta also denied reports that passengers had created a ruckus at the airport during the delay.

His comments differed from the airline's explanation, which identified the sudden illness of the assigned pilot as the reason for the disruption. The incident highlights the operational arrangements airlines may have to make when a scheduled crew member becomes unavailable unexpectedly. In this case, IndiGo arranged for another pilot to operate the flight after the original pilot reported sick. The replacement pilot's arrival from Ahmedabad was necessary because Varanasi is not an IndiGo base station, according to the airline source.

The process of arranging and positioning the replacement crew member added to the time passengers had to wait before departure. Flight 6E-6544 eventually left Varanasi for Mumbai after the alternative crew arrangement was completed. While the airport director cited technical reasons for the delay and rejected reports of a passenger disturbance, IndiGo maintained that the disruption followed the sudden illness of the scheduled pilot. Passengers were kept informed and served refreshments during the wait, and the flight later continued to Mumbai after a delay of three and a half hours.
