India’s Largest Aircraft Engine MRO Opens as PM Modi Says Aviation Taking “New Flight”

PM declares “Design in India” era as Hyderabad becomes global MRO powerhouse.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday virtually inaugurated Safran Aircraft Engine Services India’s state-of-the-art LEAP engine Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Hyderabad, proclaiming that the country’s aviation sector is now taking “a new flight” while aggressively pushing for indigenous design capabilities across aerospace and defence domains.

The sprawling ₹1,300-crore civilian MRO complex, Safran’s largest worldwide, spans 44,000 square metres and will service cutting-edge LEAP engines powering Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, creating over 1,000 high-skill jobs and marking the first time a global original equipment manufacturer has established deep-level engine servicing inside India.

Modi urged Safran to expand beyond manufacturing and establish full-fledged aircraft engine and component design centres in India, highlighting the country’s vast MSME ecosystem and youthful talent pool as ready enablers, while noting that 85 percent of India’s MRO requirements were previously met overseas, causing prohibitive costs and prolonged aircraft grounding.

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy hailed Hyderabad’s emergence as India’s undisputed aerospace capital, revealing that the state’s aerospace and defence exports crossed ₹30,742 crore in just nine months—surpassing even its famed pharmaceutical exports—and announced an upcoming ₹450-crore military MRO for Rafale M88 engines, the first outside France, set to begin operations in early 2026.

Reaffirming India’s transformation into a trusted global investment destination, the Prime Minister underscored landmark reforms including 100 percent automatic FDI in most sectors, 74 percent in defence, over 40,000 compliance reductions, and the Production Linked Incentive framework, declaring that the nation is no longer just dreaming big but taking bold decisions and delivering even bigger results on the world stage.
