India’s First Car Train Launched Just in Time for Ganpati!

Konkan Railway launches India’s first Ro-Ro car train for Ganpati travel.

The Konkan Railway (KR) has introduced a pioneering ‘roll on-roll off’ (Ro-Ro) train service for private cars, marking a significant milestone in facilitating travel during the Ganpati festival. The inaugural Ro-Ro car train, comprising 10 wagons and two passenger coaches, departed from Kolad station in Raigad district, Maharashtra, at 3:40 pm on August 23, 2025, carrying five cars and 19 passengers to Verna, Goa. The train is expected to arrive in Goa on Sunday morning, offering a novel solution for festival travelers.

A senior KR official informed PTI that the service, which operates from August 23 to September 11, 2025, requires a minimum of 16 cars per trip to be financially viable. With 8-10 additional car bookings already secured for the coming days, the railway is poised to meet the festive season’s travel demands. The specially designed rake can accommodate up to 40 cars per trip, with two cars loaded onto each of the 20 wagons. For passenger comfort, the train includes a dedicated air-conditioned coach and a second seating coach, ensuring a secure and pleasant journey while vehicles are transported on board.

The Konkan Railway, which pioneered the Ro-Ro service for trucks in India in 1999, has now extended this innovative concept to private cars for the first time. According to a KR press release, registrations for the Ro-Ro car transportation service are accepted up to three days prior to the journey until 5 pm, excluding the travel date. The cost for transporting a car from Kolad to Verna is Rs 7,875, while the fare for the Kolad to Nandgaon route is Rs 5,460.
