India's Defence Chief Meets Armenian PM to Deepen Strategic and Defence Ties
India and Armenia explore deeper defence and strategic ties.
Indian Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan led a high-level delegation to Armenia, meeting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Wednesday to discuss strengthening bilateral defence and strategic cooperation. The discussions focused on emerging security challenges, collaborative opportunities, and ways to enhance defence ties between the two nations.
During his four-day visit, General Chauhan also met Armenia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Robert Abisoghomonyan and Defence Minister Suren Papkyan, exchanging perspectives on the evolving security environment and deepening defence collaboration. The meetings underscored the shared commitment to strategic partnership and mutual capability development.
Addressing faculty and students at the National Defence Research University (NDRU) in Yerevan, General Chauhan highlighted the changing nature of warfare, emphasizing technology, multi-domain operations, and new domains such as cyber, electronic warfare, space, and cognitive domains as key determinants of modern military power.

The Indian delegation inaugurated an IT Lab and Distance Learning Centre at the Vazgen Sargsyan Military Academy, reflecting efforts to promote knowledge-sharing and capacity-building in defence technology. General Chauhan also met Lt Gen Edward Asryan, Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces, to explore further avenues for cooperation.
The visit included ceremonial events, including a Guard of Honour, a wreath-laying at the Armenian Genocide Memorial, and interactions with the Armenian military leadership. These symbolic gestures reinforced the historical and cultural bonds between India and Armenia while underscoring the importance of enduring strategic ties.
The Indian delegation, received warmly by Ambassador Nilakshi Saha Sinha and Armenian military officials, marks a significant step in advancing long-term defence and security collaboration between the two nations, strengthening India’s footprint in Eurasian strategic partnerships.
