Indian Railways To Upgrade 100 Shatabdi And Jan Shatabdi Express Trains

Indian Railways to upgrade 100 Shatabdi and Jan Shatabdi trains for better comfort.

Indian Railways is reportedly preparing a large-scale upgrade of around 100 Shatabdi and Jan Shatabdi trains as part of a broader modernisation push aimed at improving passenger comfort, safety, and overall travel experience across premium intercity services.

According to reports, the upgrade plan focuses on refurbishing existing rakes and introducing modern coach features to align these legacy trains with newer-generation services. The initiative comes amid ongoing efforts by the Railways to enhance service quality while also gradually transitioning toward more advanced train sets across key routes.

The proposed improvements are expected to include upgraded seating arrangements, better cushioning, improved legroom, modernised interiors, and enhanced passenger amenities such as charging points and improved lighting systems. Additional attention is also being given to washroom upgrades, cleaner interiors, and smoother ride quality to reduce vibrations and jerks during travel.

Jan Shatabdi trains, which operate as affordable daytime intercity services with both AC and non-AC chair car configurations, have already seen incremental upgrades in several zones in recent years, including the introduction of LHB coaches in some routes for better safety and ride stability. Shatabdi Express trains, meanwhile, remain among India’s fastest conventional passenger services, known for limited stops and high-speed connectivity between major cities.

The latest revamp plan is also viewed in the context of Indian Railways’ wider strategy to modernise its fleet, which includes increasing deployment of Vande Bharat trains and gradually replacing older coach designs with more efficient, factory-built rakes. Officials have previously indicated that improving passenger experience on existing premium trains remains a parallel priority alongside the introduction of new-generation services.

If implemented as planned, the upgrade of Shatabdi and Jan Shatabdi trains is expected to significantly enhance travel comfort for thousands of daily intercity passengers while extending the operational life and competitiveness of these long-running flagship services.
