Indian Railways Cracks Down On Bots, Blocks 60 Billion E-Ticketing Requests
Indian Railways prevented over 60 billion automated bot requests on its e-ticketing system in six months.
Indian Railways reported that its e-ticketing system blocked over 60 billion bot requests between July and December 2025, authorities said on Thursday. The massive surge in automated traffic prompted the railways to enhance its cybersecurity measures to protect genuine passengers and ensure the smooth functioning of its online booking platform.
Officials stated that the majority of these bot requests aimed to artificially reserve tickets, potentially creating artificial scarcity and preventing legitimate users from accessing seats. Advanced detection algorithms and real-time monitoring were deployed to identify and block these automated attempts, ensuring fairness for everyday passengers.
The e-ticketing system, which handles millions of bookings daily, has long been a target for bots attempting to exploit popular routes and peak travel periods. Authorities highlighted that the scale of the 60-billion-blocked requests underscores the growing sophistication of automated cyber threats faced by large-scale online services.

In response, Indian Railways has implemented several additional safeguards, including enhanced CAPTCHA verification, traffic filtering mechanisms, and periodic audits of booking patterns. Experts said such measures are critical to maintaining trust in digital infrastructure while discouraging misuse by automated scripts.
Passenger advocacy groups welcomed the move, noting that preventing bot traffic not only improves access for genuine travelers but also reduces fraudulent resale of tickets on secondary markets. The railways indicated that continuous monitoring and adaptive security protocols will remain a priority to tackle evolving cyber threats.
Looking ahead, authorities said the lessons from this six-month period would inform broader digital security strategies across the railways’ online services. By strengthening defenses against automated misuse, Indian Railways aims to enhance the efficiency, reliability, and transparency of its e-ticketing system for millions of users nationwide.
