Indian Army’s 400-km Cycle Rally Honors Wayanad’s Resilience
Army’s ride for Wayanad landslide victims
In a powerful tribute to the victims of the catastrophic 2024 Wayanad landslides, the Indian Army’s Defence Security Corps (DSC) Centre in Kannur organized a 400-kilometer cycle rally across four northern districts of Kerala, concluding on India’s 79th Independence Day, August 15, 2025. The rally, which traversed the scenic yet tragedy-scarred landscapes of Kannur, Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Wayanad, was a heartfelt gesture of solidarity with the communities devastated by the July 2024 landslides in Chooralmala, Mundakkai, Punjirimattom, and Vellarimala, which claimed 420 lives, injured 397, and left 118 missing. Beyond honoring the affected, the initiative aimed to reconnect with local communities, engage with veterans, and inspire youth to consider a career in the armed forces.
Led by Colonel P.S. Nagra, Station Commander at Kannur, the rally commenced on August 9, 2025, from the DSC Centre, covering key towns over six days: Kannur to Vadakara (August 9), Vadakara to Calicut (August 10), Calicut to Malappuram (August 11), Malappuram to Wandoor and then Mukkam (August 12), Mukkam to Kalpetta (August 13), and Kalpetta to Chooralmala and back (August 14).
The 34-member team, including soldiers, police, and members of the Wayanad District Cycling Association, cycled through rain-soaked hills, interacting with over 1,000 veterans and families of fallen soldiers along the route. The final leg on August 14 was flagged off at Kalpetta Civil Station by Wayanad District Collector Megha Sree, IPS officer Taposh Basumatry, Assistant Collector Archana, and senior veterans, symbolizing a collective homage to Wayanad’s resilience.
“This rally is more than a physical journey; it’s a commitment to stand with the people of Wayanad, showing them they are not alone and inspiring the next generation to serve the nation,” said Col. Nagra, emphasizing the rally’s deeper purpose. The event also featured a SPARSH outreach program at Kalpetta’s APJ Hall, offering support to ex-servicemen and their families through help desks for Aadhaar, banking, and ECHS services, addressing their pension and welfare concerns.

The landslides, triggered by torrential rains on July 30, 2024, were among Kerala’s deadliest, flattening homes, tea estates, and schools in Wayanad’s Meppadi panchayat. The Indian Army’s response was swift, with 200 soldiers from the DSC Centre, alongside the 122 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) and medical teams from Military Hospital Kannur, rescuing over 1,000 people in a 10-day operation.
The Army’s efforts, supported by the NDRF, Navy, and local volunteers, were lauded, with locals giving an emotional farewell to soldiers on August 8, 2024, chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” as they departed Mount Tabor School. The cycle rally builds on this legacy, reinforcing the Army’s bond with Wayanad’s people.
The rally culminated at Kalpetta Parade Ground on August 15, coinciding with Independence Day celebrations, where participants were honored for their dedication. Wayanad District Collector Megha Sree praised the initiative, noting, “This rally embodies unity and hope, reminding us of the strength we draw from community and service.”
The event also highlighted the Army’s broader role in disaster response, as seen in recent operations like the Kishtwar cloudburst rescue and Operation Sindoor, reflecting its unwavering commitment to national welfare. As Wayanad rebuilds, the rally stands as a beacon of solidarity, honoring the fallen and inspiring a resilient future.
