Violent Clashes Erupt in Kerala Colleges Over Partition Horrors Remembrance Day!

Tensions flared across Kerala college campuses on Thursday as the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), affiliated with the RSS, observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, following a directive from Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. The move triggered violent clashes with the CPI(M)-backed Students Federation of India (SFI), the Indian Union Muslim League’s Muslim Students Federation (MSF), and the Congress-affiliated Kerala Students Union (KSU).

At a government college in Kasaragod, ABVP’s posters commemorating the day were torn down by SFI activists, leading to physical confrontations. Police intervened to quell the clashes, but tensions escalated when SFI burned an effigy of the Governor outside the campus. MSF activists later joined the protests, shouting slogans against the event and the Governor as police formed a barrier. Similar scenes unfolded at Calicut University in Kozhikode, where SFI, MSF, and KSU jointly opposed ABVP’s program, clashing with both ABVP members and police while protesting with flags and banners.

Kerala Higher Education Minister R. Bindu condemned the events, urging those in authority to avoid creating “explosive situations” on campuses. “Unnecessary issues are being created,” she said, referencing prior controversies over saffron imagery and now the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.

The Governor’s directive, issued per Union Home Ministry instructions, called for universities to hold seminars commemorating the day. However, the Left-led state government and the opposition United Democratic Front criticized it as divisive. ABVP observed the day at multiple institutions, including Kerala Central University, IHRD College in Kumbala, Kasaragod Government College, and Chendayad MG College in Kannur, amid widespread protests.
