India Records Fourth Consecutive Peak Power Demand Surge During Extreme Heatwave

Extreme heat drives India’s electricity demand to record levels.

India’s electricity demand has reached record levels for the fourth consecutive day as an intense heatwave continues to grip large parts of the country, pushing temperatures to extreme levels and increasing pressure on the national power grid. The Union Ministry of Power has urged citizens to use electricity responsibly during peak hours to help manage rising consumption.

According to the Ministry of Power, the country’s peak daytime electricity demand touched 270.82 gigawatts on May 21, marking the highest power consumption level recorded so far this summer. The demand has steadily increased over the past several days, rising from 257.37 GW on May 18 to 260.45 GW on May 19 and 265.44 GW on May 20, reflecting the growing impact of sustained high temperatures across multiple regions.

Officials stated that peak electricity usage is generally recorded between 2 pm and 4 pm, when cooling requirements are at their highest. In a public advisory shared through social media, the ministry said the government remains prepared to meet the rising energy demand despite extreme weather conditions. However, it also appealed to consumers to avoid unnecessary electricity consumption and adopt energy-saving practices wherever possible.

The surge in power demand comes amid severe heatwave conditions affecting several northern, western, and central Indian states. According to the India Meteorological Department, temperatures in many districts have crossed 45 degrees Celsius, with Banda in Uttar Pradesh recording a seasonal high of 48 degrees Celsius. The prolonged heat has increased dependence on air conditioners, coolers, fans, and refrigeration systems, significantly raising electricity consumption nationwide.

Weather officials have forecast that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to continue over parts of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh in the coming days. Authorities have advised residents to remain hydrated, avoid direct exposure to the sun during afternoon hours, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses as temperatures remain unusually high for this time of year.

Energy experts note that India’s rapidly rising power demand during peak summer months highlights the growing challenge of balancing electricity supply with climate-driven consumption spikes. While the national grid has so far managed the increased load, sustained extreme weather conditions could continue to test infrastructure capacity and operational resilience across the power sector.
