India Prepares to Host 89th IEC Meeting in Capital

Over 2,000 experts gather in New Delhi for IEC 2025.

India is set to host the 89th General Meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in the national capital from September 15-19, 2025, drawing over 2,000 experts from more than 100 countries. This landmark event, held at Bharat Mandapam, will focus on shaping international standards for a sustainable, all-electric, and connected future, reinforcing India’s growing influence in global technology and innovation.

The prestigious gathering, inaugurated by Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, will feature a grand opening ceremony, while Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will launch the IEC GM Exhibition, showcasing cutting-edge advancements in electrotechnical fields. This marks India’s fourth time hosting the IEC General Meeting, following successful events in 1960, 1997, and 2013, as highlighted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

The five-day summit will see experts engage in over 150 Technical and Management Committee meetings to develop next-generation standards for critical areas like artificial intelligence (AI), e-mobility, and inclusive technology solutions. These standards aim to drive global innovation while addressing pressing challenges like sustainability and accessibility in an increasingly connected world.

Founded in 1906, the IEC is the world’s leading authority on international standards for electrical, electronic, and related technologies, with a network of 30,000 experts spanning 170 member countries. Representing 99% of the global population and impacting 20% of world trade, the IEC’s work is vital to fostering innovation and safety in technology. India’s leadership in this domain is further cemented as it takes on the role of Global Secretariat for Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC) standardization, a key area for clean, pollution-free energy solutions.

Vimal Mahendru, IEC Vice President, emphasized the significance of India’s role, stating, “India’s leadership in LVDC standardization will accelerate global efforts to create sustainable, clean technology standards that benefit billions.” James Wood, IEC’s Director of Communications, echoed this sentiment, calling India “a true sustainability champion” and an ideal host for this global dialogue. He cited recent surveys showing overwhelming public support for green and clean energy solutions, underscoring the urgency of the IEC’s mission.

A highlight of the event is the IEC GM Exhibition, the largest of its kind in India’s electrotechnical sector. Featuring 75 exhibitors, including top industries, associations, and startups, the exhibition will showcase innovations in electric mobility, smart lighting, electronics, and IT manufacturing. Open to the public from September 16-19, 2 pm to 6 pm, with free entry via prior registration, the exhibition offers a unique platform for Indian startups to network with global leaders and gain international exposure.

The event also prioritizes nurturing future leaders through the IEC Young Professionals Programme, with 93 young innovators from around the world participating in workshops, boot camps, and industry visits. These activities aim to equip the next generation with the skills and insights needed to shape the future of technology.

Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General of BIS, highlighted India’s commitment to integrating quality and standardization into education. Through BIS’s student chapters and a six-month internship program, young professionals gain hands-on experience in industries and the standards development process, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.

As India hosts this global summit, it not only reinforces its position as a hub for technological advancement but also sets the stage for groundbreaking standards that will shape a sustainable, electrified, and inclusive future for the world.
