IMD Warns of Cyclonic Weather Over Andaman & Nicobar from October 21–25

Cyclone alert issued as storms threaten Andaman Islands.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a cyclone alert for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal is poised to intensify starting October 21, 2025. Authorities are bracing for potentially severe weather conditions that could disrupt life across the archipelago, with heavy rainfall and gusty winds expected to batter the region through October 25.

According to IMD officials, the cyclonic system is likely to bring heavy rainfall of 7-11 cm to isolated areas of the Nicobar Islands. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are forecast for both the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on October 21, 22, and 23, with similar conditions expected to persist in some areas on October 24 and 25. The IMD has also warned of squally weather over the Andaman Sea, with wind speeds reaching 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, from October 22 to 23.

Rough sea conditions are anticipated, prompting a stern advisory for fishermen to avoid venturing into the Andaman Sea and coastal waters around the Andaman and Nicobar Islands until at least October 24. Local port warnings have been issued to alert mariners of the deteriorating conditions. The administration has urged boat owners, islanders, and tourists to exercise extreme caution, particularly when navigating surging waves. Recreational water activities are to be conducted with heightened vigilance, and the public is strongly advised to adhere to all safety guidelines issued by local authorities.

The Andaman and Nicobar administration has emphasized the need for preparedness, urging residents and visitors to stay updated on weather advisories and avoid unnecessary travel or outdoor activities during this period. Tourists have been specifically requested to refrain from sea-based excursions to ensure their safety as the region prepares for the potential escalation of this weather system.

As the islands gear up for turbulent weather, the IMD continues to monitor the cyclonic circulation closely, with updates expected as the situation evolves. Residents are encouraged to stay indoors during heavy rainfall and secure their properties against strong winds and potential flooding.
