IMD Warns Arunachal of Torrential Rains and Thunderstorms Beginning Monday
IMD issues heavy rain and thunderstorm alert for Arunachal Pradesh from Monday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a critical weather alert for Arunachal Pradesh, forecasting widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms across multiple districts starting Monday, October 6, 2025. According to the Meteorological Centre in Itanagar, Tawang is expected to face very heavy rainfall, with precipitation levels ranging between 12-20 cm in isolated areas over the next 24 hours, while West Kameng is likely to experience heavy rainfall of 6-11 cm. The IMD’s bulletin warns of potential disruptions, including temporary traffic chaos, reduced visibility, and the risk of landslides or flash floods in hilly and low-lying regions, urging residents to stay vigilant.
The forecast indicates that the intense weather will persist into Monday, with scattered to fairly widespread rainfall expected across central and eastern districts, including Papum Pare, East Kameng, Kurung Kumey, Lower Subansiri, and East Siang. This follows heavy rainfall that lashed several parts of the state on Sunday, affecting districts such as West Siang, East Siang, Dibang Valley, and Papum Pare. The IMD’s alert highlights the monsoon’s active grip on the region, with the potential for significant impacts on infrastructure, agriculture, and daily life in this northeastern state known for its rugged terrain and vulnerability to weather-related disasters.
On Tuesday, October 7, the IMD predicts a slight reduction in rainfall intensity, with moderate showers confined primarily to Papum Pare, East Kameng, and Changlang, while western and central districts may experience scattered rain and thundershowers. However, the weather is expected to intensify again on Wednesday, particularly in East Siang, Lower Dibang Valley, and West Kameng, where thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are forecast. These conditions could exacerbate risks in areas already saturated from prior rainfall, increasing the likelihood of soil erosion, flash floods, and disruptions to transportation networks in the state’s hilly landscapes.

The IMD has issued specific advisories for farmers, urging them to postpone sowing activities to avoid crop damage due to the heavy rainfall. The department recommends using mulching materials to protect soil from erosion and prevent seed displacement in agricultural fields. This advice is critical for Arunachal Pradesh, where agriculture forms a significant part of the local economy, and unpredictable weather can have far-reaching consequences. Authorities are also preparing for potential emergency responses, with local administrations on alert to manage any incidents of landslides or flooding that could arise from the forecasted downpours.
As Arunachal Pradesh braces for this bout of intense weather, the IMD’s warnings underscore the need for preparedness in a region prone to monsoon-related challenges. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts, avoid travel during heavy rainfall, and take precautions in vulnerable areas. The coming days will test the state’s resilience, with the IMD’s forecasts serving as a crucial guide for communities, farmers, and local authorities navigating the risks posed by this turbulent weather system.
