IMD Predicts Heatwave Across Interior Tamil Nadu, Temperatures Up To 3°C Above Normal
IMD warns of continued heatwave across Tamil Nadu, slight relief later
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that intense heatwave conditions will persist across interior parts of Tamil Nadu over the next few days, with temperatures expected to remain up to 3 degrees Celsius above normal until at least Friday.
According to the weather agency, hot and dry conditions will dominate much of the state, particularly during peak afternoon hours. The sustained rise in temperature is likely to increase public discomfort and elevate the risk of heat-related illnesses in several districts. Authorities have urged residents to take precautions as the heatwave continues to intensify.
Interior regions of Tamil Nadu are expected to record maximum temperatures ranging between 39 and 41 degrees Celsius in the coming days. Meanwhile, coastal areas, including Chennai, are likely to experience high humidity levels alongside elevated temperatures, making conditions feel significantly hotter than the actual readings.

Recent observations highlight the severity of the heatwave gripping the state. On Monday, multiple locations recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, with Karur Paramathi registering the highest at 40.6 degrees. Cities such as Vellore and Erode also touched 40 degrees, while Madurai Airport, Namakkal, and Tirupattur recorded temperatures close to 39 degrees. Other urban centres, including Coimbatore, Salem, and Dharmapuri, reported temperatures hovering above 38 degrees.
Despite the prevailing heat, the IMD has indicated the possibility of partial relief later this week. A low-pressure system extending from northeast Bihar to southern Tamil Nadu is expected to bring light rainfall to certain regions. Isolated showers are likely over districts along the Western Ghats, delta areas, and parts of Ramanathapuram, potentially offering temporary respite.
Officials have advised residents to remain vigilant by staying hydrated, avoiding direct exposure to sunlight during peak hours, and taking extra care of vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions. While some relief may be on the horizon, Tamil Nadu is expected to continue experiencing heat stress conditions in the near term before any gradual weather transition occurs.
