IMD Issues Fresh Alert for Rain and Thundershowers in Mumbai Today
Mumbai expected to receive rain throughout the day.
Mumbai is expected to experience widespread rain and thundershowers on Sunday as active monsoon conditions continue to prevail over the city, according to forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather system is likely to keep the city under mostly cloudy skies through the day, with intermittent showers expected to intensify into the evening and night hours. Authorities have indicated that rainfall activity is part of the broader monsoon progression across Maharashtra, which has strengthened after a brief early-season deficit.
Meteorological assessments suggest that precipitation will remain consistent throughout the day, with short breaks in rainfall followed by heavier spells later. Forecast models, including those cited by private weather agencies, indicate that Mumbai’s maximum temperature is likely to hover around 33 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is expected to settle near 27 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels are also expected to remain high due to continuous moisture influx from the Arabian Sea, contributing to uncomfortable and sticky conditions despite rainfall.
According to updated projections, the probability of precipitation in Mumbai is expected to remain extremely high throughout Sunday. Daytime estimates place the likelihood of rain at around 97 per cent, rising to nearly 100 per cent by night, indicating near-certain rainfall activity across the city. Such conditions are typical during an active monsoon phase when low-pressure systems and moisture-laden winds sustain continuous cloud formation and rainfall over coastal Maharashtra.

The current spell of rain follows the official onset of the southwest monsoon in Mumbai earlier this week, marking the beginning of the city’s primary rainy season. The monsoon, which arrived about 13 days later than its usual onset date, has since regained momentum after a reported rainfall deficit of 25 to 40 per cent across parts of central India during the first half of June. Regions including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Odisha have witnessed renewed rainfall activity as the system advances further inland.
Earlier this week, Mumbai experienced its first major monsoon downpour on June 24, which disrupted normal life across several parts of the city. Heavy rainfall led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic congestion and delays in local train services during peak hours. Some suburban pockets recorded exceptionally high rainfall, with Malvani reporting around 340 mm and Parel receiving approximately 334 mm within a 24-hour period. While rainfall intensity eased later in the day, the episode highlighted the city’s vulnerability to sudden heavy showers during the early monsoon phase. Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions closely as the monsoon progresses.
