IIT Delhi Climbs to 118th in QS Rankings, Strengthens India's Global Standing
IIT Delhi improves to 118th globally in QS rankings, matching India's institutional best.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has emerged as the country's highest-ranked educational institution in the QS World University Rankings 2027, securing the 118th position globally. The latest rankings, announced on June 18, 2026, place IIT Delhi five spots higher than its 123rd position in the previous edition, allowing the institute to match the best-ever global ranking achieved by an Indian institution in the QS rankings.
The improved performance was driven by gains across several key indicators, with Employer Reputation recording one of the most significant advances. IIT Delhi climbed 11 places in this category to reach the 39th position worldwide, reflecting the strong confidence employers have in its graduates and highlighting the institute's ability to produce industry-ready professionals with competitive skills.
The institute also registered a major jump in the Employment Outcomes indicator, improving by 60 positions. This metric evaluates how effectively universities prepare students for successful careers and leadership roles. In addition, IIT Delhi improved by 26 places in the Citations per Faculty category, demonstrating the growing global impact and quality of research carried out by its academic community.

Commenting on the achievement, Prof. Somnath Baidya Roy, Dean, Planning and Head of the Ranking Cell at IIT Delhi, said the institute remains committed to delivering world-class and affordable technological education while strengthening its position as a preferred destination for scholars from across the globe. He added that curriculum reforms, upgraded infrastructure and greater international engagement are expected to further enhance the institute's standing.
IIT Delhi noted that its latest performance represents consistent progress over recent years. The institute has climbed 79 positions in the QS World University Rankings over the past four years, moving from 197th place in the 2024 edition to 118th in the 2027 rankings. The steady rise reflects ongoing efforts to improve academic quality, research output and global collaborations.
The institute has also performed strongly in subject-specific rankings. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, disciplines such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering and Civil Engineering were placed among the world's top 50. IIT Delhi also retained its status as India's leading institution in Engineering and Technology by securing the 36th position globally in the category.
