IAF Microlite Aircraft Crashes into Pond in Prayagraj During Routine Sortie; Both Crew Safe
A two-seater IAF training microlite plane force-landed in a pond in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj after a technical malfunction, with pilots unharmed.
An Indian Air Force two-seater microlite aircraft experienced a technical malfunction during a routine training sortie from Air Force Station Bamrauli near Prayagraj on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. The aircraft, commonly used for pilot training, bird reconnaissance, and survey missions, force-landed safely in a pond in an uninhabited area near the K P College ground in the George Town locality. Defence sources confirmed that both the pilot and the co-pilot/crew member activated the recovery system and emerged completely safe, with no injuries reported. The incident occurred around 12:15 PM, and the aircraft did not catch fire, likely due to landing in water, ensuring no damage to civilian life or property.
The IAF promptly stated that the microlite aircraft “was safely force landed in an uninhabited area,” emphasizing the absence of any harm to the public. Authorities, including local police, fire brigade, and defence teams, cordoned off the crash site and initiated recovery operations. The aircraft was retrieved from the pond without complications. A Court of Inquiry has been ordered by the Indian Air Force to investigate the exact cause of the technical snag and ascertain contributing factors.
Microlite aircraft like the one involved—often models such as the Pipistrel Virus series operated by the IAF—play a vital role in basic flight training and low-level operations. This incident highlights the importance of robust safety protocols and emergency systems in military aviation training. Fortunately, the swift activation of the recovery mechanism prevented any casualties, and the remote landing spot minimized risks.
