Hyderabad Floods Leave Three Missing as Torrential Rains Batter City

Heavy rains flood city, trigger chaos and urgent rescue missions.

Hyderabad was plunged into chaos on Sunday night, September 14, 2025, as torrential rains unleashed widespread flooding, swept away at least three people in raging drains, and paralyzed the city with severe waterlogging and traffic gridlock. The relentless downpour, which battered the Telangana capital for hours, turned streets into rivers, disrupted daily life, and prompted urgent rescue operations to locate those missing in the deluge.

The most harrowing incidents occurred in Afzalsagar and Vinoba Nagar. In Afzalsagar, around 8:30 pm, two youths from Mangor Basti were swept away while attempting to cross the swollen Afzal Sagar drain in Mallepalli. Eyewitnesses reported that the pair slipped on the slippery bank and were carried off by powerful currents before rescue could arrive. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Asif Nagar Division) B. Kishan Kumar confirmed, “Due to heavy rains, two persons were washed away in the nala. A search operation has been launched, but they have not been found yet.” In a separate tragedy in Vinoba Nagar, Musheerabad, another individual went missing after falling into a drain and is feared drowned. Local police, alongside Disaster Response Force (DRF) and fire department teams, are conducting intensive search efforts despite challenging conditions.

The Telangana Development Planning Society recorded staggering rainfall, with Boudha Nagar Community Hall in Musheerabad logging 124 mm between 8:30 am and 11:00 pm, followed by MCH Colony (118.5 mm) and Jawahar Nagar Community Hall (114.3 mm). The Meteorological Department reported Shaikpet as the hardest-hit area, with 8 cm of rain, while East Anand Bagh, Bandlaguda, and Lalpet also saw significant downpours. The deluge inundated low-lying areas like Kushai Guda, Abids, Himayat Nagar, Tolichowki, Neredmet, and Ram Nagar, stranding vehicles and forcing commuters to wade through knee-deep water.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Mayor Vijayalaxmi Gadwal took charge at the command control center on Banjara Hills Road No. 12, one of the worst-affected areas. In a post on X, she stated, “I’m personally overseeing efforts to manage waterlogging. GHMC and HYDRAA teams are diverting water and rerouting traffic. I’ve instructed officials to deploy additional motors to clear water swiftly.” Civic teams, traffic police, and disaster management personnel worked tirelessly to pump out water and restore normalcy, but the sheer volume of rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems.

The India Meteorological Department’s Met Centre in Hyderabad issued a severe weather warning, forecasting heavy rainfall in isolated areas across districts including Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal Malkajgiri, Adilabad, Nizamabad, and others until 8:30 am on September 15. The alert also cautioned about thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph, heightening risks across the region.

The flooding has laid bare Hyderabad’s chronic infrastructure challenges, with clogged drains and inadequate stormwater systems exacerbating the crisis. Social media buzzed with images of submerged roads and stranded commuters, while local businesses reported property damage. Authorities have urged residents to avoid flooded areas and limit travel, emphasizing safety as rescue operations continue. The search for the three missing individuals remains a top priority, with hopes dwindling as the rains persist. This disaster underscores the urgent need for robust urban planning and flood mitigation measures to protect Hyderabad from future calamities.
