Home Ministry Flags Pro-Iran Radical Preachers, Urges Vigil Amid Global Tensions

Home Ministry asks states to monitor pro-Iran preachers and social media for statements that may incite violence.

The Union Home Ministry has directed all states and Union Territories to monitor pro-Iran radical preachers delivering inflammatory sermons that could incite violence following the recent Israel-US military action against Iran, officials said. The advisory was circulated on February 28.

The ministry also urged authorities to keep a close watch on social media accounts linked to extremists and global terror groups, noting that online rhetoric could amplify tensions domestically. Officials emphasized that heightened vigilance is necessary to prevent law-and-order disturbances triggered by international developments.

In addition, the Home Ministry instructed states to strengthen security measures at consulates, embassies, and other diplomatic missions of the United States and Israel across India. Authorities were asked to ensure protection of personnel and infrastructure, mitigating the risk of any untoward incidents.

The advisory comes amid public demonstrations by Shia mourners in several Indian cities expressing outrage and grief over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during the US-Israel strikes. While protests were largely peaceful, the ministry highlighted the potential for isolated incidents to escalate if left unchecked.

Officials underscored that states must maintain a balance between allowing lawful expression of grief and preventing any acts that could threaten public safety. The directive reflects a proactive approach to safeguarding diplomatic missions and maintaining domestic tranquility amid rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

State governments have been asked to coordinate closely with central security agencies and report any suspicious activities promptly. The Home Ministry’s advisory also reminds local authorities that extremist narratives, whether through sermons or online content, could have a ripple effect, potentially inciting violence in local communities.
