Himanta Sarma Highlights 1904-05 Kamakhya Land Record As Historic Testament

Historic record documents Kamakhya Temple’s enduring cultural legacy.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has described a historic land record dating back to 1904-05 as an important testament to the enduring spiritual and cultural legacy of Maa Kamakhya and the traditions associated with the Kamakhya Dham. Sharing details of the century-old document on social media on Saturday, Sarma said it represented more than an old land record and reflected the deep-rooted faith and history surrounding the revered temple.

Sarma said the document offers a historical link to the centuries-old traditions associated with the Kamakhya temple, one of the prominent Shakti Peethas in India. He described it as evidence of the continuity of religious and cultural practices that have shaped the identity of Kamakhya Dham across generations. The Chief Minister also linked the record to the broader heritage of the Sanatan civilisation.

The Assam Chief Minister emphasised the importance of preserving historical documents that provide an account of the region’s religious and cultural traditions. He said such records can help future generations understand the historical continuity of institutions and places of spiritual significance. Sarma stressed that protecting the heritage associated with Maa Kamakhya remains an important responsibility.

The Kamakhya temple is located atop Nilachal Hill in Guwahati and is among the major pilgrimage centres associated with the Hindu Shakti tradition. The shrine attracts devotees from across India and abroad and has a distinctive place in Assam’s religious, cultural and historical landscape. Its traditions and festivals have also contributed significantly to the cultural identity of the region.

Sarma said preserving the heritage of the Shakti Peeth Maa Kamakhya and passing it on to future generations is a resolve of the state. His remarks came amid the Assam government's broader emphasis on protecting cultural heritage, religious sites and historical traditions while undertaking development initiatives around major pilgrimage destinations.

The 1904-05 land record, according to Sarma, serves as an archival link to the history of Kamakhya Dham and the traditions that have continued over the decades. The Chief Minister's remarks have drawn attention to the importance of preserving such historical records, which can provide valuable documentation of the continuity of religious institutions and cultural practices in Assam.
