Himachal in Crisis: 385 Roads Blocked, Lives Lost as Monsoon Havoc Wreaks Rs 1,200 Crore Damage

Heavy rains wreak havoc in Himachal Pradesh, blocking 385 roads and causing massive damage and loss of life.

Himachal Pradesh is reeling under intense monsoon fury as torrential rains have triggered widespread destruction, blocking 385 roads — including two National Highways — and severely disrupting daily life across the hill state.

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), National Highway 70 (Mandi-Kotli) and NH 707 (Hatkoti to Poanta Sahib) have been shut down at multiple points due to massive landslides. Disaster-hit Mandi district alone accounts for 252 road closures, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The rains have also knocked out 263 power transformers and crippled 220 water supply schemes, adding to the residents' woes.

Since the monsoon’s onset on June 22, Himachal Pradesh has been battered by 40 flash floods, 23 cloudbursts, and 25 landslides, leaving a tragic toll of 76 dead and 34 missing in rain-related incidents. The total estimated damage now stands at a staggering ₹1,247 crore.

Despite the chaos, monsoon activity remained “normal” on Tuesday night, with light to moderate rainfall across regions — Manali received the highest at 57 mm.

With roads severed, infrastructure damaged, and rescue efforts stretched thin, the hill state faces a race against time as weather-related disasters continue to mount.
