Heavy Rains Halt 22 Trains in Jammu Division

Torrential rains disrupt rail services, cancel 22 trains.

The Northern Railways announced the cancellation of 22 trains scheduled for Wednesday, August 27, affecting services halting at or departing from Jammu and Katra railway stations, with an additional 27 trains short-terminated due to unprecedented rainfall battering the Jammu region. The relentless downpour, described as the heaviest in decades, has unleashed chaos, triggering floods, landslides, and severe damage to infrastructure across the region.

According to the Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway’s Jammu Division, the cancellations include nine trains from Katra, the base camp for the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, one from Jammu, and others destined for Katra, Jammu, and Udhampur stations.

The heavy rainfall, with Jammu city recording over 250 mm in less than 24 hours, has caused widespread disruption, damaging bridges, roads, and inundating residential and agricultural areas. The resulting chaos has forced many residents to relocate to safer zones.

Further compounding the crisis, train services between Pathankot and Kandrori in Himachal Pradesh have been suspended due to severe soil erosion and flash floods at the Chakki River. Twenty-seven trains were short-terminated at stations like Firozpur, Manda, Chak Rakhwalan, and Pathankot to mitigate risks. Despite the disruptions, rail operations on the Katra-Srinagar stretch remain unaffected, offering some relief to travelers.
