Heatwave Intensifies In Tamil Nadu As IMD Reports Temperatures Above 38–40°C

Tamil Nadu faces worsening heatwave with temperatures crossing 40°C in multiple districts.

Tamil Nadu is witnessing an intensifying heatwave as temperatures have surged sharply across multiple districts with the onset of peak summer. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), at least 13 locations in the state recorded temperatures above 38°C on April 28. The persistent rise in mercury levels signals worsening heat stress conditions across both interior and coastal regions.

Among the hottest areas, Tiruchirappalli recorded the highest temperature at 40.5°C, making it the hottest location in the state for the day. Other districts also reported severe heat conditions, with Vellore and Erode registering around 39.4°C. Similarly, Karur Paramathi, Meenambakkam in Chennai, and Madurai Airport area recorded close to 38.9°C, indicating widespread heat impact.

Several other districts also remained under high temperature stress. Regions such as Tirupattur and Dharmapuri recorded around 38.3°C, while Salem, Thanjavur, Madurai city, Tiruttani, and Namakkal hovered near 37.8°C. The widespread nature of the heatwave highlights that both inland and coastal districts are experiencing nearly uniform temperature spikes this summer season.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that conditions are expected to worsen further over the coming days. Forecasts suggest a possible rise in maximum temperatures by up to 3°C across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Puducherry by Saturday. Officials attribute the rise to dry atmospheric conditions, clear skies, and strong solar radiation typical of late April in the region.

High humidity levels, especially in coastal areas, are expected to further increase discomfort, pushing “feels-like” temperatures even higher than recorded values. Health authorities have cautioned that such conditions may raise the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, particularly during peak afternoon hours when exposure is highest.

Authorities have issued advisories urging residents to take precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and wearing protective clothing. Vulnerable groups such as elderly citizens, children, and individuals with existing health conditions have been specifically advised to remain indoors as much as possible. The IMD continues to monitor the situation and may issue additional warnings if the heatwave intensifies further.
