Haryana Transfers Rohtak SP Amid Uproar Over IPS Officer’s Suicide
Haryana SP faces fallout after harassment claims in tragic death.
In a shocking turn of events rocking Haryana's police force, the state government on October 11, 2025, swiftly removed Rohtak Superintendent of Police (SP) Narendra Bijarniya from his post, attaching him to police headquarters in Panchkula amid accusations of abetting the suicide of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar. The move marks the first official action in a scandal that has ignited outrage among bureaucrats and demands for deeper accountability, including calls for the arrest of Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur.
The tragedy unfolded shortly after Puran Kumar, a former Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the Rohtak range, was transferred out on September 29. Days later, his former Personal Security Officer (PSO), head constable Sushil Kumar, was arrested on extortion charges based on audio-visual evidence from a complainant. Bijarniya, overseeing the case, claimed Sushil confessed to demanding money on Puran Kumar's behalf. Tragically, Puran Kumar allegedly took his own life by shooting himself the very next day, leaving behind a suicide note explicitly blaming Bijarniya and DGP Kapur for relentless harassment that pushed him to the brink.
Puran Kumar's wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, lodged a formal complaint echoing the note's allegations, pinpointing a "false FIR" in the extortion probe as the breaking point. Returning urgently from an official trip to Japan with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini's delegation, Amneet refused to permit an autopsy until justice is served, leading to a tense standoff at Chandigarh's PGI mortuary on Saturday. Despite pleas from top officials like Chandigarh DGP Sagarpreet Hooda and a day-long mediation by Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi and ACS-Home Sumita Misra, she held firm, with her AAP MLA brother Amit Rattan accusing police of surreptitiously shifting the body without family consent.

Chief Minister Saini, who visited Amneet's residence and received a detailed two-page letter outlining her demands for family protection and swift action, vowed a thorough probe. "We will spare none, irrespective of their influence," Saini declared, offering condolences and urging opposition parties to avoid politicizing the grief. Bijarniya, now replaced by IPS officer Surinder Singh Bhoria, defended his actions, stating the arrest stemmed from solid evidence and that investigations were ongoing when the suicide occurred.
The scandal has galvanized Haryana's IAS fraternity, with a faction demanding Kapur's immediate arrest and speculation rife that he could be sidelined on leave. As the extortion case hangs in limbo and the autopsy remains stalled, the incident exposes deep fissures within the state's law enforcement, raising urgent questions about internal harassment, false cases, and the toll on officers' mental health. With public and bureaucratic pressure mounting, the government faces a litmus test in delivering transparency and closure to a family shattered by loss.
