Haryana CM Vows Strict Probe in Dalit IPS Officer’s Suicide
Haryana CM promises strict probe after IPS officer Y Puran Kumar’s suicide citing caste harassment.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini addressed the tragic suicide of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, calling it an “unfortunate incident” and pledging a fair investigation to deliver justice to the officer’s family. Speaking at a BJP state executive meeting in Panchkula, Saini led a two-minute silence for Kumar and declared, “No matter how influential the culprit, they won’t be spared.”
The 52-year-old 2001-batch officer was found dead on October 7 with a gunshot wound in his Chandigarh home, leaving a note accusing 11 serving and retired officers, including Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur, of caste-based discrimination and mental harassment.
Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, demanded an FIR before allowing autopsy or cremation, leading Chandigarh Police to register a case on October 9 against Kapur and 10 others for abetment of suicide. The accused include senior officers like ADGPs Amitabh Dhillon and Sanjay Kumar, and former DGPs Manoj Yadava and PK Agrawal, among others.
A six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Chandigarh IG Pushpendra Kumar, was formed on October 10 to conduct a “prompt, impartial, and thorough” probe, focusing on evidence collection and witness examination under FIR No. 156/2025.
The case has sparked significant political attention, with Congress leaders Randeep Surjewala, Deependra Hooda, Kumari Selja, former Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi, AAP’s Manish Sisodia, and Azad Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar visiting Kumar’s residence. BJP’s Haryana Transport Minister Anil Vij also paid respects. Saini, who was in Japan with Amneet during the incident, promptly consoled her and sent officials to assist, urging that the tragedy not be politicized.

The allegations of caste-based harassment in Kumar’s note highlight systemic issues within India’s bureaucracy. As the SIT investigates, Saini’s commitment to justice and coordination with the central government signal a critical moment for addressing discrimination and ensuring accountability in Haryana’s administration.
