Gurugram Waterlogging Prompts Outrage as Residents, Opposition Question Government

A day after heavy rainfall caused widespread waterlogging and severe traffic congestion in Gurugram, residents and Opposition leaders intensified criticism of the Haryana government and local administration. The recurring disruption during the monsoon has raised questions over the city’s preparedness and drainage infrastructure. Residents have expressed frustration over the repeated flooding of major roads and the difficulties faced by commuters during periods of heavy rain.

Videos and photographs showing school buses stranded near Subhash Chowk circulated widely on social media, drawing considerable public attention. Children were reportedly stuck inside some of the buses for hours as vehicles struggled to move through the waterlogged roads. The visuals added to public anger and prompted renewed questions about the safety of schoolchildren and the preparedness of authorities to deal with heavy rainfall.

The waterlogging affected several parts of the city and contributed to major traffic jams, leaving commuters stranded for extended periods. Roads around busy areas became difficult to navigate as accumulated rainwater slowed the movement of cars, buses and two-wheelers. The disruption also highlighted the challenges faced by residents and workers who depend on Gurugram’s major road corridors for daily travel.

The latest episode has once again placed Gurugram’s monsoon preparedness under scrutiny. While heavy rainfall can temporarily overwhelm urban drainage networks, the repeated nature of waterlogging has increased demands for longer-term solutions. Residents are now seeking improvements to drainage, road infrastructure and emergency response systems to ensure that future spells of heavy rain do not leave schoolchildren, commuters and other residents stranded for hours.
