Gujarat Police Launches Statewide Anti-Drug Awareness Drive Across The State

Statewide campaign promotes awareness against drug abuse.

Gujarat Police on Friday organised large-scale awareness programmes across Ahmedabad and Surat to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, reaffirming the state's commitment to combating narcotics trafficking and preventing substance abuse through strict enforcement and active public participation. The events brought together police personnel, students, civil society groups and local residents to promote the message of a drug-free society.

In Ahmedabad, the Gujarat Police's Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) organised a cyclothon at the Sabarmati Riverfront to spread awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse. Director General of Police and Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G.S. Malik flagged off the event, which witnessed participation from senior police officials, government staff, students and members of the public. Speaking on the occasion, Malik said June 26 serves as an important opportunity to educate citizens about the growing challenges posed by narcotics and encourage collective action against drug abuse.

The cyclothon formed part of a broader public awareness campaign launched by the ANTF under the theme of strengthening the nation's resolve towards a "Drug-Free India." Police officials said such outreach initiatives are aimed at involving communities in the fight against narcotics while encouraging young people to stay away from substance abuse. The campaign also highlighted the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the public in curbing drug-related crimes.

In Surat, the city police organised a public awareness rally involving senior police officers, students from schools and colleges, non-governmental organisations, media representatives and local residents. Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot said the annual rally has become a regular initiative to reaffirm the city's commitment to fighting drug abuse. He stated that the programme reflects the collective determination of the police and the community to continue taking strict action against narcotics throughout the year.

The awareness drives coincided with the release of the Gujarat government's anti-narcotics enforcement data for the past five years. According to official figures, police have registered more than 3,700 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, arrested 5,346 accused, and seized over 1.36 lakh kilograms of narcotic substances valued at more than ₹13,600 crore. Officials said the state has strengthened its anti-drug strategy through dedicated enforcement units, technology-driven investigations, intelligence-based reward schemes and de-addiction and rehabilitation programmes aimed at reducing the impact of substance abuse across Gujarat.
