Delhi Police And MCD Begin Drive Against Illegal Parking Across City

Delhi Police and MCD launch drive against illegal parking in key areas.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), in coordination with the Delhi Police, has launched an intensive enforcement and awareness drive aimed at curbing illegal parking and improving traffic flow across the national capital. The initiative, which began this week, focuses on encouraging motorists to make use of designated multi-level parking facilities instead of parking vehicles on roads, footpaths, service lanes, and no-parking zones.

Officials said the drive is designed to reduce congestion in busy commercial and residential areas while ensuring better utilisation of existing parking infrastructure. Authorities have noted that despite the availability of structured parking spaces, many motorists continue to park haphazardly near markets and public spaces, creating bottlenecks and obstructing smooth vehicular movement.

The initial phase of the campaign covers six key multi-level parking locations, including areas such as Kamla Nagar, Greater Kailash-I M-Block Market, Hauz Khas, Qutub Road, Nizamuddin Basti, and Parade Ground. These sites have been identified as high-traffic zones where illegal parking has frequently caused congestion and inconvenience to pedestrians and emergency services.

As part of the joint operation, teams from the Delhi Traffic Police and MCD will carry out both enforcement and awareness activities. While violations will be penalised through challaning, towing, or wheel-clamping, authorities will also engage with residents, shopkeepers, and market associations to promote the use of authorised parking spaces and encourage better civic discipline.

Officials from the MCD and Delhi Police stressed that the campaign is not limited to punitive action but also aims to bring long-term behavioural change among road users. They urged citizens to plan their visits in advance and use designated parking facilities to avoid contributing to traffic congestion in already crowded areas.

The enforcement drive will continue over the coming weeks, with authorities warning that strict action will be taken against repeat offenders and habitual violators. Officials said sustained cooperation from citizens, RWAs, and local businesses will be crucial in making the capital’s roads safer, more organised, and less congested.
