Gujarat CM Says Classical Language Status For Pali, Prakrit Preserves Jain Literary Heritage

Pali, Prakrit classical status aids Jain heritage preservation.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Saturday said the Centre’s decision to grant “Classical Language” status to Pali and Prakrit has played an important role in preserving Jainism’s literary and cultural heritage. He made the remarks while inaugurating the newly built Shri Nitya Shanti Bhavan at Shela in Ahmedabad, highlighting the importance of cultural preservation alongside development initiatives in the state.

Patel stated that the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken “historic steps” to safeguard ancient Indian knowledge systems. He said the vision of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi” (development along with heritage) was being reflected through policies aimed at protecting scriptures, languages, and traditional knowledge. He added that granting classical status to Pali and Prakrit would help ensure that rare Jain texts and philosophical works remain accessible to future generations.

The Chief Minister also referred to initiatives such as the Samprati Museum in Koba, Gandhinagar, stating that such institutions demonstrate the government’s commitment to preserving India’s spiritual and cultural legacy. He further cited events like the Somnath Swabhiman Parva as examples of efforts to restore and celebrate India’s historical and civilisational heritage.

The inauguration ceremony of Shri Nitya Shanti Bhavan was held under the guidance of religious leader Padmasagarsurishwar Maharaja, with Minister of State for Urban Development Darshana Vaghela also in attendance. The event drew participation from Jain community leaders and devotees, marking the opening of a new facility aimed at supporting religious, educational, and community activities.

Speaking at the event, Patel emphasised the importance of spirituality in modern society, stating that material comforts alone cannot provide lasting peace or happiness. He said that integrating spiritual values with contemporary life could create a more balanced approach to public welfare and social well-being, particularly for younger generations.

The newly inaugurated Shri Nitya Shanti Bhavan includes a temple complex, monastic residence facilities, lecture halls, educational spaces, and a pilgrim rest house. It is expected to function as a centre for religious learning, community service, and cultural activities, while continuing the Jain tradition of compassion, education, and public service.
