Gujarat CM Pays Tributes, Links PM Modi’s Policies to Gandhi’s Ideals
Gujarat CM praises Modi for advancing Gandhi’s ideals.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel paid heartfelt tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary, highlighting how Prime Minister Narendra Modi is carrying forward the Mahatma’s vision of cleanliness, self-reliance, and upliftment of the poor. Speaking at Kirti Mandir, a memorial dedicated to Gandhi in his birthplace of Porbandar, Patel emphasized the enduring relevance of Gandhi’s principles in shaping modern India.
During the event, Patel laid floral tributes at the memorial and addressed a gathering, underscoring Gandhi’s contributions to India’s freedom struggle and his focus on rural development and social equity. “Mahatma Gandhi ignited a movement for the poor and rural progress. Prime Minister Modi has taken this vision to new heights through good governance, empowering the marginalized and downtrodden,” Patel said.
Patel lauded Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, launched on October 2, 2014, as a transformative initiative that turned cleanliness into a nationwide movement. “By picking up the broom, PM Modi set a global example. The Swachh Bharat Mission has revolutionized India, with people from all walks of life now prioritizing cleanliness,” he remarked, noting its impact on public consciousness.

The Chief Minister also highlighted Modi’s commitment to Gandhi’s concept of Antyodaya—uplifting the last person in society—through welfare schemes targeting the poor. He praised Modi’s Vocal for Local campaign, which echoes Gandhi’s swadeshi philosophy, promoting Indian-made products to foster self-reliance and economic prosperity. “Recent GST reforms have simplified taxation, boosting the swadeshi movement and accelerating India’s development,” Patel added.
In a separate event, Gujarat and Maharashtra Governor Acharya Devvrat paid homage to Gandhi at Gujarat Vidyapith in Ahmedabad, a deemed university founded by the Mahatma over a century ago. Devvrat, the institution’s current Chancellor, participated in ceremonies honoring Gandhi’s legacy. Meanwhile, an all-religion prayer meeting was held at Sabarmati Ashram, Gandhi’s home from 1917 to 1930 and a key center of India’s freedom struggle, reflecting the continued reverence for his ideals.
Patel’s remarks come amid contrasting narratives, as Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin criticized the central government’s actions on the same day, highlighting a divide in how Gandhi’s legacy is interpreted. Nonetheless, Patel’s tribute underscores Gujarat’s deep connection to the Father of the Nation and Modi’s efforts to align national policies with Gandhi’s vision.
