Four Killed, Nine Injured as Mumbai BEST Bus Loses Control While Reversing

A BEST bus in Mumbai’s Bhandup lost control while reversing, killing four and injuring nine; the driver was arrested.

A devastating accident involving a BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport) bus claimed four lives and injured nine others in Mumbai's Bhandup area on the night of December 29, 2025. The incident occurred around 10 pm outside Bhandup railway station, a busy location where pedestrians frequently wait for buses or gather near roadside shops. According to police, the driver was reversing the bus at the endpoint of its route when he lost control, causing the vehicle to veer backward and crash into a group of people standing in front of a clothing store.

CCTV footage that has since emerged captures the horrifying moment: at least eight to ten pedestrians are visible on the roadside when the bus suddenly reverses at speed. Panic ensues as several individuals rush inside the shop for safety, while others are knocked down or crushed beneath the vehicle. The video shows bystanders immediately rushing to assist the injured amid the chaos, highlighting the sudden and catastrophic nature of the collision. Eyewitnesses described the bus appearing to accelerate moments before it veered off course, though police are still verifying these accounts as part of their ongoing investigation.

The driver, identified as Santosh Ramesh Sawant (52), was taken into custody shortly after the incident, and a case has been registered against him under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for causing death by negligence. A large police contingent, including senior officials, was quickly deployed to secure the site, manage traffic, and coordinate with emergency services. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. Authorities have not yet released details on the condition of the survivors.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and announced ex-gratia compensation of ₹5 lakh each to the families of the deceased. In a post on X, he wrote, "The tragic incident in which 4 people lost their lives in a fatal accident near Bhandup railway station in Mumbai is extremely unfortunate. I pay my heartfelt tribute to them. In this incident, 9 people were injured, and I pray at the feet of God for their speedy recovery." The statement reflects official condolences and support for the affected families.

The accident has once again spotlighted concerns over road safety in Mumbai's densely populated areas, particularly around bus terminals and railway stations where large crowds gather. Investigations are continuing to determine the exact cause, including possible mechanical failure, driver error, or external factors. As the city mourns the loss of life, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the need for stricter safety protocols and vigilance in public transport operations during peak hours.
