Everyone Should Move Forward in Life With Yoga, Says Health Minister Nadda

Nadda urges universal yoga adoption for healthy ageing and wellness.

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda participated in the 12th International Day of Yoga celebrations in the national capital on Sunday, urging people to incorporate yoga into their daily lives. Addressing a mass yoga session, Nadda highlighted the role of yoga in promoting physical, mental and emotional well-being and encouraged citizens to adopt the practice as a means of achieving a healthier and more balanced lifestyle.

The minister credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for elevating yoga to the global stage and helping transform it into an internationally recognised movement. According to Nadda, the Prime Minister's efforts played a significant role in securing worldwide recognition for yoga, enabling the ancient Indian practice to reach millions of people beyond the country's borders and become a tool for global wellness.

Speaking at the event, Nadda said yoga should not remain limited to any one nation but should serve humanity as a whole. He noted that the recognition of yoga by the international community has made it more accessible to ordinary people and strengthened its role as a universal practice for health and well-being. He urged participants to make yoga an integral part of their lives and use it as a means of personal growth and self-improvement.

This year's International Day of Yoga is being observed under the theme "Yoga for Healthy Ageing," which focuses on promoting active and healthy living at every stage of life. The theme reflects growing global concern over ageing populations, lifestyle-related illnesses and non-communicable diseases. It also highlights the importance of improving quality of life and overall well-being rather than focusing solely on increasing life expectancy.

The national observance was led by Prime Minister Modi at Kolkata's Red Road, where thousands of participants gathered to celebrate the occasion. The event formed part of nationwide and international programmes organised to mark the annual observance. Government leaders, public representatives and citizens joined yoga sessions across the country, reinforcing the growing popularity of the practice among diverse age groups.

Yoga, which originated in India thousands of years ago, has evolved from a spiritual and philosophical discipline into a global wellness movement. In 2014, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga following a proposal introduced by Prime Minister Modi and supported by 175 member states. Since the first celebration in 2015, the occasion has become an annual global event aimed at promoting health, mindfulness and holistic well-being across communities worldwide.
